Do You Need Us?

If there’s one thing we’re sure of, it’s that not everybody needs an idea consultant. Here’s a nice list of ways to figure out if hiring us is really what you want to do right now!

You need us if…

You need someone who’s turned impossible situations into peaches & cream so many times, she could do it in her sleep. Or…

You need inspiration and encouragement — and someone who understands the hard, confusing part of entrepreneurship. Someone who knows beyond a shadow of a doubt that you can get what you want on your own terms if you’re willing to put the work in. You need to be told that someone HAS done this before, and that you can do it too. Or…

You kind of know what you want, but you haven’t the vaguest idea how to go about implementing it. You need someone to imagine all the niches and crannies, someone who can make you an actual plan that you can follow, step-by-step, to make the right things happen. Or…

None of your ideas feel quite crazy enough. You need someone who thinks crazy for a living — someone who has often trod the balance between “actually too crazy for plausible implementation” and “so crazy it just might work”. I can imagine exactly where your business might go, without shooting too low! Or...

You’re completely confused about where to go next. There are just too many things grasping at you for attention and you know you need some innovative new directions — but hell if you know what they are. Or…

You need a catalyst who can put together all the pieces, and make sure that amazing things happen in the course of your project — someone who has made impossible projects work before, and can make sure yours is just as successful.

You DON’T need us if…

You think we’re going to do all the work for you. Even when we’re talking about catalyst work (where we get our hands dirty), we still need you to be the anchor for your project to move forward. We don’t have any magic powers — all we can do is show you creative directions to move in, help you formulate the steps that will get you where you want to be, and in some cases, make sure all the pieces come together and work smoothly. We still need your participation in order to create exciting results. Any idea catalyst or consultant is, at best, a source of new creativity, an old hand at planning crazy shit, and even more fundamentally, a guide. You’ll have to hire your own minions. (Though we certainly don’t mind helping you coordinate them!) Or…

You’re in the habit of seeing more problems than possibilities. If you find yourself continually saying things like “Well, the problem is…” or “That won’t work because…” we probably won’t work very well together. Or…

You’re determined to do things your way, or the old way, or the traditional way. If you’re not willing to try a few solutions outside of the box, chances are I won’t be able to help you much. My ideas are usually more than a little crazy. (That’s probably the only reason they still work!) Or…

You’re looking to hand off responsibility for your thing. The truth is, you’re really the person who knows the right and wrong paths. You know the most about your business and you have the best gut instincts for what roads to take. We can help you unveil roads you didn’t know were there and we can help you plot the path to follow them, but even if we’re the catalysts for your project, you’ll still eventually have to develop and go with your gut instinct. You’re responsible for the success of your venture. We’re just a mad source of information and assistance.

Well, crap. I guess I don’t need you after all!

Don’t worry — you can still take advantage of all our free ideas, and we’re still friends. And who knows? Maybe some day you’ll wake up and realize… shit! This time I really do need this kind of help!
